Have you heard of agarwood? Never mind if you haven’t. The secret is you’ve probably used it by now. Agarwood is one of the most precious, rare, and most expensive essential oils on the market.
Used in some of the world’s most exclusive perfumes, agarwood seems like one of the best investments for years to come. The essential oil is derived from the resinous bark of a tree that only grows in part of South East Asia.
Fun fact: a pound for pound, agarwood costs more than gold. Also known as Oud oil, the essential oil is used in incense and small carvings as well. The interesting part is that the oil is derived from a tree only when the tree becomes infected with a type of moult.
How is that for irony? Mould is responsible for creating one of the most exclusive scents in the world.
