Anzio is a city and commune on the coast of the Lazio region in Italy. It is located 51km south of Rome. The city is well known for its seaside harbor settings. Today, it serves as a fishing port and a departure point for ferries and hydroplanes to the Pontine Islands.
Back in the days of WW2, Anzio was an important point. The Battle of Anzio was a battle of the Italian Campaign of World War II. It took place from January 22, 1944 up to June 5, 1944. It began with the Allied amphibious landing known as Operation Shingle, an ended with the capture of Rome.
The operation was opposed by German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno. ALied forces needed to attack Germany and Italy once they had successfully ended their African campaigns. They wanted to take Italy first, and then attack France to pressure the Axis.
