Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest medical challenges of our time. Influenced by factors such as industrial livestock farming, poor hygiene in hospitals, and the misuse of antibiotics, multiresistant strains of bacteria have become a serious threat. This documentary explores different approaches to combat these strains of bacteria to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases and save lives.
Each year in Europe, 33,000 people die due to antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Hygiene specialists like Dr. Ron Hendrix recognize the need to prevent the spread of bacteria just as actively as preventing infection. In this documentary, Dr. Hendrix discusses how he convinced a number of German hospitals to re-open their diagnostic laboratories. Additionally, farmers in Denmark voluntarily reduced their widespread use of antibiotics after evidence showed a link between intensive livestock farming and multiresistant bacteria.
