John Pilger’s documentary Utopia brings to light the deplorable conditions of many Aboriginal Australians, living in poverty and with limited access to basic needs. The town of Utopia, located in one of Australia’s most impoverished areas, is a prime example of such misfortune. Pilger visits Utopia and finds the residents living in makeshift huts made from asbestos – overcrowded, under-resourced and suffering from a range of diseases. Unfortunately, these people are not free from police brutality either.
The documentary seeks to shed light on this issue and provoke much-needed action. By exposing the plight of the Aboriginals in Australia, it serves as an urgent call for better treatment and more resources dedicated to addressing their needs. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for viewers to gain insight into this complex situation, allowing them to develop empathy and understanding for those affected by it.
