Transgender people are often ostracized by their own families, leaving them to fend for themselves and survive any way they can. In Pakistan, many trans people turn to begging, sex work, or dancing just to make ends meet. Only a small percentage of Pakistan’s population of 220 million is officially counted as members of the “third gender,” yet the actual number may be as high as 300 thousand.
Third Person is a documentary that explores the harsh realities of the trans community in Pakistan. The film follows Sunny, a trans person who begs to survive, and Reem Sharif, an expert on transgender issues who works with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Sharif provides support and advocacy for the community, working to raise awareness and acceptance for trans people in Pakistan’s conservative society.
