At more than 430 miles long, the Mauritania Railway has been transporting iron ore across the blistering heat of the Sahara Desert since 1963.
The Mauritania Railway is the national railway of Mauritania, and opened first in 1963. It consists of a single line linking the iron mining center of Zouerate with the port of Nouadhibou, via Fderik and Choum. The line is controlled by the Societe Nationale Industrielle et Miniere.
In the past several years, this railway has also become a tourist attraction. People from all over the world are coming to hitchhike on the hot, free, and dangerous train ride. It is described as the best train journey in the world.
