Every year, millions of migratory birds migrate across Europe, making their incredible journey from the north in early spring to the south in autumn. However, over recent years there has been a steady decline in the number of these birds we have seen in our skies; some species are even being completely wiped out. What could be causing them to avoid flying over our lands?
Christian Moullec is an ornithologist who has dedicated over two decades to studying and watching birds. In order to gain a better understanding of what exactly is causing them to go elsewhere, he decided to take it one step further: he learned how to fly a microlight in order to fly alongside them and observe them from above. This has allowed him to identify potential threats they face during their seasonal journey, as well as develop solutions that could help the birds continue their pilgrimages unharmed.
Thus was born his extraordinary project: The Migration School – where a small group of geese would learn from Christian’s side how to traverse our modern world without danger. He plans on continuing his research with this group and then eventually releasing them into the wild with the hope that they will retain all they have learned and will be able to teach other wild geese in the future.
This remarkable story is documented in a recent feature-length documentary film titled ‘The Migration School’ which follows Christian as he embarks on his mission and provides insight into the struggles and challenges faced by migratory birds on their quest across Europe. The movie provides an eye-opening look at what these majestic animals must endure during their annual migration. We are encouraged to watch this incredible documentary and do our part in helping protect these vulnerable creatures so that future generations can continue experiencing their beauty flying through our skies for many more years yet to come.
