The city of Ur, located just outside of modern-day Baghdad, was once a bustling ancient Sumerian metropolis. Dating back to around 3000 BCE, it was one of the most important cities in the region and home to over 65,000 people. But when the Akkadians swept in during the late 1800s and early 1900s, they quickly became an unstoppable force that would shape the future of the entire region for millennia to come.
Led by Sargon—the first true world emperor in history—the Akkadians annexed cities along the Tigris-Euphrates river valley and left an indelible mark on every society that followed. Sargon is credited with introducing many reforms and improvements to his empire, such as making Akkadian the official language and founding the city of Akkad as his seat of power. This legacy stretched even into 1931 when Nile Valley archaeologists uncovered Nineveh—the capital of the Assyrian empire—to find it had been originally an Akkadian city built 1500 years before its current inhabitants.
What’s more impressive is that Sargon also accomplished this feat without completely destroying any conquered cities or cultures, instead opting to integrate them into his own rule through trade agreements and other diplomatic engagements. He may have ruled with a seemingly iron fist but his reign saw unprecedented levels of economic growth and prosperity for all involved.
Sargon’s fame has only grown over time — not least because there are still so many unanswered questions about his life. Though he ruled for 56 years until being succeeded by two of his sons in quick succession, it was not until almost 2,000 years after his death that texts and inscriptions finally mentioned him by name.
His grandson Naram-Sin is often credited with pushing Akkadian influence even further than what Sargon achieved; however without him at its helm, weakening forces due to climate change, famine and invading enemies took hold which ultimately led to the downfall of both Naram’s son’s reign as well as their great city of Akkad.
