‘Prescription for Disaster’ is a documentary film investigating the symbiotic relationships between the pharmaceutical industry, the FDA, lobbyists, lawmakers, medical schools, and researchers, and the impact this has on consumers and their health care. It explores the consequences we, as a society face because of the way business and health treatment works today.
The film highlights Vioxx, which turned out to be a catastrophic tragedy because of a regulatory failure by FDA and the Center of Drug Evaluation and Research.
The film critically scrutinizes patented drugs, the reasons for them being so prevalently prescribed by doctors, and the role played by insurance companies and HMOs in ensuring conformity.
Substitutes to traditional pharmacology and drug therapy, such as vitamins, nutritional supplements, diet, exercise and healthy lifestyle are also evaluated, along with the marketing and public relations efforts the pharmaceutical companies deploy including sales reps, medical journals and conferences.
