Nordlingen is a historic German town built inside a meteorite crater. It is one of only 3 towns that has its city walls intact.
The city, located in Bavaria, sits on a pile of diamonds. But the locals have no intention of destroying the city in search of wealth and treasure.
The city is built on top of diamonds originating some 15 million years ago. At the time, the Earth got hit by an asteroid. Some estimates are that there are 72 tons of diamonds in the area of Nordlingen.
The city first got mentioned in recorded history in 898, and in 1998 the town celebrated its 1100th anniversary. The city served as the location of two battles during the Thirty Years’ War.
