Birds of Paradise are extremely rare species of birds. They are members of the family Paradisaeidae, and majority of them are found in Papua New Guinea. There are 42 known species in 15 genera, 38 of which are found on the island of Papua New Guinea.
There is a reason why the island is considered the best for bird watchers. The list of bird species recorded in Papua includes 782 species, 76 of which are endemic. Twenty eight of those are globally threatened.
Most of the birds on the island are land and freshwater species, but there are also sea birds, and migrants from countries to the North and South.
