He got powerful by getting involved in drug smuggling. As the cocaine industry grew in Colombia, thanks in part to its proximity to Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, Escobar found the crime organization that later became known as the Medellin cartel.
At the time of his death, he had a net worth of $37 billion. Considered one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world, he was shot allegedly by his brother Rodolfo.
