Matthias Maurer has always dreamed of being the first German to touch the moon’s surface. And now, he’s one of the very few selected astronauts undergoing rigorous and sophisticated training to make this dream a reality. But this desire has brought him face to face with an arduous journey.
For a long time, the moon was ignored by scientists and astronomers, but today, the world has its eyes set on the new moon race. The US, China, and Europe seek more than just scientific discovery; there’s an eagerness to gain economic and strategic benefits. Enter Matthias Maurer, the 49-year-old materials scientist from Saarland, western Germany, who has been picked by the European Space Agency (ESA) in its mission to land on the moon, maybe as early as 2024. In the meantime, Matthias must master Russian and Chinese, learn complex machines, and gear up for the most challenging moments that defy human explanations. Lea Albrecht reports on this documentary of a lifetime.
