CNN veteran reporter Jean Carper has embarked on a personal journey to discover all there is to know about Alzheimer’s disease. She is 83 years old and finds herself at high risk for getting the disease. In her earlier career, she played an integral part in spreading information about Alzheimer’s to the public with a documentary some 30 years prior. In this new documentary, Carper attempts to explore the changes in tone surrounding the disease as well as her own experiences of high-tech testing for the condition.
The film starts off with Carper reflecting on how society has treated Alzheimer’s as a looming doom, something that can’t be prevented. To illustrate this idea of impending doom, she makes use of imagery from horror films as well as her own experiences when it comes to testing for the condition. However, despite this rather gloomy outlook, Carper ultimately offers an uplifting and inspiring opinion about how we can save ourselves from what appears to be our doom.
Jean Carper’s powerful documentary provides us with thought-provoking moments and encourages us to reflect on our attitude towards Alzheimer’s disease and the elderly population. By taking us through her journey of self-discovery, she sheds light on not only how far science has come in understanding this condition but also highlights how much more work needs to be done in order for us to overcome its symptoms and effects. For anyone looking for a deeper understanding of Alzheimer’s or simply wanting to gain an insight into a senior person’s life – then this documentary should be at the top of your watch list!
