The presidential election campaign in Brazil has deeply divided its society, and the triumph of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the recent presidential election comes with considerable challenges. The country has been through four years of Jair Bolsonaro’s right-wing administration and an election campaign marred by political violence. Lula is now at the helm of a deeply polarized society.
The Brazil Experiences takes us on a journey through the lives of three people from São Paulo, sharing their competing visions for their country’s future before, during, and after the election campaign. A left-wing activist, an arms dealer, and an evangelical Christian – all of whom have very different views on the direction in which Brazil should be heading. For Lula’s supporters, his election promises the restoration of a pluralistic democracy serving all Brazilian citizens equally. For Bolsonaro’s supporters, the defeat has been devastating as they feel Lula does not have Brazil’s interest at heart.
