In Mexico, traditional gender roles are still prevalent. Men are expected to be macho, womanizers, and breadwinners, while women should defer to the man’s will in every respect. This way, many husbands are known for cheating on their wives and having children with other women. Adelaida’s husband routinely cheats on her, and even wants her to meet the children he has fathered with his mistress.
The younger generation is, however, starting to fight back, with success. Nancy Ortiz, a law graduate and a single mother, has broken away from tradition and chosen a different path. She has emancipated herself from the traditional world view, much to her father’s displeasure, fearing that his daughter could lose her value as a woman. Meanwhile, Jaime Sainz undergoes “macho therapy” to break away from the old role model. Still, his son doubts whether the older generation is truly ready to change their ways.
