French King Louis XIV is the longest-reigning monarch, having served as monarch for more than 72 years. He took the throne at the age of four, and died at the age of 76 in his architectural masterpiece, the Chateau of Versailles.
For comparison, Queen Elizabeth II reigned for 70 years and 214 days. But she became the monarch at an older age, and lived longer, passing at 96 years and 140 days.
Speaking of Louis XIV, his contemporaries thought that he is immortal. His painful agony in the end came as a result of a devastating disease, gangrene. It lasted for 23 days and revealed the incompetence of physicians at the time.
His death causes a crisis of succession with consequence that would affect entire Europe.
