The tragic and heartbreaking story of Joy Morgan, a beloved student midwife who suffered the loss of three important male figures in her life as she grew into a young woman, is chronicled in the documentary Joy Morgan: A Search for Belonging. Through interviews with people close to Joy, as well as archival footage and detailed accounts of her life, viewers are invited to gain an insight into the struggles she faced before her untimely death in December 2018.
Joy was a bright light who not only studied to become a midwife but also volunteered at various charities and had a great passion for music. She was described by those who knew her best as an incredibly kind and helpful person who had genuine concern for others around her. However, when faced with the grief of losing those closest to her she began searching for something that would make her feel “at home”.
Following Joy’s death, friends and family formed the ‘Joy Morgan Foundation’ in order to provide support to young women experiencing grief or difficulty finding belonging. The foundation has since provided grants for students studying midwifery; whilst also providing therapy sessions for those struggling with depression or feeling alone.
As well as exploring the difficulties faced by young people during times of hardship, the documentary also celebrates Joy’s life and all that she achieved. It highlights how even though Joy experienced tragedy, she still managed to positively impact those around her and remain an example that even in times of adversity we can still show compassion and kindness towards others.
For anyone interested in understanding how unexpected events can affect young lives or looking for hope during darker times, this powerful documentary serves as an important reminder that there is always something worth fighting for – no matter how difficult it may seem at first glance. We encourage you to watch this touching film about one remarkable woman’s journey through life – you won’t regret it!
