The Iran-Iraq border is a dangerous place, especially for the kolbars, the Kurdish people who risk their lives in order to transport goods across it. Every day these individuals brave the treacherous mountain terrain and cold temperatures in order to reach the other side, and are constantly at risk of being targeted by border guards. In 2020 alone, there were 61 reported deaths, with 181 more suffering injuries or torture.
These courageous people take on this difficult task as their source of income; however, what they receive is not nearly enough compensation for the risks taken in this hazardous job. Despite this reality, they continue to carry out their jobs out of necessity to provide for their families and survive in an oppressive environment.
This untold story has been brought to light by ‘Kolbar’, a documentary directed by Behrouz Nouranipour which features interviews with real kolbars and shows how these individuals put their lives at stake daily. It is a story that needs to be heard and seen so that something can be done for those affected by such a violent border.
