There are more than 200 dead bodies on that can be found towards the peak of Mount Everest. It is the Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas.
Every year, people try to climb the top of Mount Everest. The peak of the mountain is 8,848 meters above sea level. The first ascent was on May 29, 1953, when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest.
Most of the climbers actually die on the way back down from the mountain. The Death Zone, which is 8,000 meters up, combines lethal factors like blistering cold, low oxygen, and high elevation. There is a reason why Everest is known as the highest graveyard on planet Earth.
So far, only around 4,000 people in the whole world have scaled the summit. Hundreds have perished. The last year without a known death on the mountain was 1977. Only two people reached the summit that year.
That is why climbing Everest is a journey that can bring you glory and put you in a select group of people, or bring you death. This documentary takes a look at how that journey looks.
