What makes an invention a failure?

Edison’s electric pen: a useful mechanism with adoption limits
Thomas Edison developed the electric pen in 1875 and patented it in August 1876 with assistant Charles Batchelor. It perforated paper to create a stencil, which could then be used to make multiple copies. The Science Museum Group says the pen could make 50 punctures per second. Edison claimed that more than 5,000 copies could be made at once; that is his reported claim, not an independently verified production result.

The pen depended on a battery and lost ground to mechanical pens and the growing popularity of the typewriter. Edison abandoned the idea in 1880. In a letter quoted by Science Museum Group curator Kerry Grist, an unnamed London agent wrote, “The day for the Electric Pen has passed.” The idea had an afterlife: Edison’s duplicating press was later used in the mimeograph, and adaptations of the pen contributed to later electric tattoo-machine ideas. The curator cautions that the precise line of influence is uncertain.
Apple Newton: ambitious features, difficult trade-offs
Apple presented the Newton, a personal digital assistant, in Boston in 1993. It combined notes, an address book, an organizer, fax, and communication features. TÜV NORD gives its entry price as $700 and identifies short battery life, early handwriting-recognition problems, and the need to connect to an external device to communicate as shortcomings. Apple cut production in 1998 after Steve Jobs returned. Despite its commercial disappointment, the Newton helped set benchmarks for interface design, convenience features, and ARM processors.
Nokia N-Gage: combining categories did not solve usability
Nokia launched the N-Gage in 2003 as a phone and portable game console in one device. TÜV NORD reports a $300 price and notes a small game selection, cumbersome play, and the need to remove the battery to change games. Its side-mounted microphone and speaker also made calls awkward. The “taco phone” nickname and “sidetalking” meme captured how the physical design overshadowed the product’s novelty.
Shelved prototypes: failure before mass production
Not every failed invention became a consumer product. CNRS News describes examples from the Direction des inventions archive, which documented inventions from 1917 onward. A 1918 horse gas-mask prototype associated with Giroux was judged too heavy and insufficiently airtight. A portable radiator proposal received the assessment “nothing to retain,” while a sawdust-briquette project was abandoned after its inventor did not explain what made it distinctive. These cases show how evaluation could end a project for technical, practical, or communication reasons.
DeLorean DMC-12: a commercial setback with a cultural afterlife
The Museum of Failure account dates the DeLorean DMC-12 to 1981–1983. It describes production delays, competitors catching up, an engine considered underpowered for the car’s luxury-sports positioning, and the burden of cleaning and polishing its stainless-steel panels. The company went bankrupt. The car later became famous as the time machine in Back to the Future, but cultural recognition is not evidence of commercial success. These details come from a retrospective exhibition account, rather than a comprehensive automotive history.
Why do inventions fail?
Across these examples, the barriers differ: a prototype may fail a practical test, a device may be difficult to use, or a launched product may not justify its price to enough customers. Competition and production timing can also matter. The Museum of Failure account lists factors such as bad design, weak leadership, ignoring customers, inadequate testing, poor marketing, bad timing, and chance; it does not provide a single explanation that fits every case.

The electric pen’s duplicating mechanism and adaptations contributed to later uses, while the Newton is described by TÜV NORD as setting benchmarks for later PDA design.
