DOOM is one of the best known and most beloved video game series of all time. The studio behind its creation, id Software, has been a driving force in the gaming industry since its inception in the early 1990s. With iconic titles such as Wolfenstein, DOOM and Quake, they have revolutionized the way we play and experience video games.
id Software was founded by four friends who wanted to create something revolutionary. They had a rock n’ roll attitude that captured the hearts of gamers during that era, had an aura of mythos around them and were seen as rebels who broke all the rules. Though some of these founding members have moved on or left id Software, their influence is still felt today.
The period from2012-2016 saw a blindspot in the studio’s history; there were no new major releases from them during this time. This lack of output resulted in public consciousness gradually fading away from them, until 2016 when they released DOOM – an incredibly confident game which not only brought back the classic feel associated with their earlier works but also added a new spin to it.
Noclip recently created a documentary where Danny O’Dwyer spoke with members of id Software to discuss their history, cancelled projects such as DOOM 4 and how DOOM 2016 came to be released against all odds. This series is an incredible insight into what it took for such a revolutionary game to come about and should not be missed by any fan of this genre!
