In “From Homemaker to Presidential Candidate, in Belarus,” Turkish journalist Can Dündar follows the journey of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya – a woman who never intended to lead a political movement, but rose to the challenge of fighting for her country’s freedom in the face of dictatorship.
As a former homemaker, Tsikhanouskaya’s husband’s imprisonment sparked her own run for the presidency in Belarus, where she unexpectedly became the main opposition to authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko. But when Lukashenko’s reelection was marred by accusations of fraud and Tsikhanouskaya was forced into exile, this unlikely activist began a tireless mission to secure freedom for political prisoners – including her husband.
