The Brexit referendum had a far-reaching impact on millions of people in the UK, but none more so than those in the country’s fishing industry. When the Leave campaign promised more control over fishing rights in British waters, many fishermen saw this as a chance for a brighter future. But more than two years after Brexit, they feel betrayed by their government and their Prime Minister, whose promises they claim have not been fulfilled.
In this documentary, we explore the human consequences of Brexit for the fishing community in North East England. Through intimate interviews with local fishermen and their families, as well as shop owners, suppliers and hip-hop artists who have also been impacted by the fallout, we discover how this once-thriving industry has been left struggling under the weight of empty promises and political upheaval.
