The American Staffordshire Terrier, otherwise known as Amstaff or simply Stafford, is a popular breed of dog that has been favored by Americans for their hardworking and loyal nature. This breed can be traced back to the early twentieth century when they began to gain social stature and eventually became accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1936. The name of the breed was altered slightly in order to differentiate it from the similar-looking Staffordshire Bull Terrier found in England.
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a muscular, medium-sized dog that typically weighs between 40 to 70 pounds and stands between 17 and 19 inches tall at the shoulder. They have thickly muscled necks, broad chests, and well-developed shoulders. Their coats are short, glossy, and smooth with a wide variety of colors available including red, blue, tan, black and brindle. Despite their intimidating appearance, these dogs are known for their sweet personalities which make them excellent family pets.
American Staffords love human companionship and have an unbeatable loyalty that will make them devoted members of the family. Despite this loyalty they can also be quite independent and require proper guidance when it comes to training; early obedience classes are highly recommended for this breed. As with all breeds of dogs they need plenty of regular exercise such as walks around the block or trips to the park – activities like these will help keep your pet fit both physically and mentally while providing important opportunities for bonding time with you!
