Since its creation in 1958, DARPA, or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has been involved in hundreds of military projects in the United States of America.
Many believe the Agency is the America’s best kept secret weapon. Nobody knows exactly what projects DAPRA funds, and what are the end results. To get a better understanding, if you have an idea for a tank, you won’t get funding from DARPA. However, if you have an idea for an invisible tank, that is something that will be one DARPA’s radar.
The agency was first created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, with a sole purpose to formulate and execute research and development projects to improve the American military. The agency was supposed to achieve that goal by expanding the frontiers of technology and science use in the military.
Eisenhower was afraid of the Russian technology, since the Russians managed to launch Sputnik 1 in 1957, years before the Americans land on the moon. DARPA was the answer to that, as the President wanted to be sure that American technology and military weaponry is always more sophisticated than that of its opponents.
The agency is independent from other military programs, and reports directly to a senior Department of Defense management. In the latest years, some believe that DARPA is working on weaponry to control civilian non-combatants like women and children. And that is where the problem begins. The controversy surrounding DARPA will always be there, it is just a matter how much you believe in that.
