This documentary is concerned with the life and work of Ai Weiwei. He is a Chinese artist and a political activist. The director of this documentary and a personal acquaintance of Weiwei is an American filmmaker Alison Klayman.
Among the people involved in the making of this documentary were the closest family members of Weiwei and his first gallerist from New York. The documentary was screened on the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 and has received several awards since.
As a political activist, Weiwei was involved in a number of projects including blogging activities on Sina Weibo and leading a survey team to the critical areas in the province of Sichuan that were affected by the earthquake that happened on May 12th in 2008.
His open criticism and, at times, harsh rhetoric against the Chinese government resulted in a number of incidents and an arrest that lasted for 81 days. During that time no charges were filed against Weiwei.
