The term was originally used to describe any diffuse astronomical object, including even galaxies beyond the Milky Way. There are many different types of nebulae, including galaxies, globular clusters, open clusters, emission nebulae, reflection nebulae, planetary nebulae, dark nebulae, and supernova remnants.
