The Buddha, Siddhattha (also known as Siddhartha – meaning one whose purpose has been achieved), was born over two thousand and five hundred years ago in North India. He was the founder of a great religious philosophy, Buddhism, which has since been adopted by millions of people around the world. His father, King Suddhodana, ruled over the land of the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu on the Nepalese frontier; his mother was a princess named Mahamaya.
The life of Siddhattha is full of stories and legends that have been passed down generations for centuries. After living in luxurious royalty for 29 years, Siddhattha renounced his worldly possessions and embarked on an ascetic journey to find enlightenment.
