The film Memphis Belle, produced by David Putnam in partnership with Catherine Wyler, is an emotional tribute to the strength of the human spirit. Based on true events, it tells the story of a World War II B-17 bomber crew who have embarked on their 25th and final mission before being allowed to go home.
The cast for this remarkable movie is composed entirely of ten young actors, and brings to life the struggles and successes that these brave men faced during their service in WW2. Although this film takes a dramatic approach to its subject matter, viewers would be remiss not to seek out the documentary upon which it was based – William Wyler’s Academy Award-winning documentary The Memphis Belle: A Story Of A Flying Fortress.
The documentary provides a more detailed look into the lives and experiences of these real heroes: from the harsh living conditions they endured aboard their bomber plane, to the courage they displayed during their missions. It also gives unprecedented access into how war affected those around them – from family members waiting at home for any news of their return, to civilians affected by bombings.
Memphis Belle may tug at our heartstrings with its fictionalized account of history, but The Memphis Belle: A Story Of A Flying Fortress offers a much more intimate view into real life wartime stories that deserve attention – both in recognition of what has been sacrificed on our behalf by countless individuals over time, and as an opportunity for us all to learn about our shared past and be inspired by those that came before us.
