In Cutting Edge, award-winning documentary-maker Jane Treays dives into the world of America’s purity movement. This controversial phenomenon has seen one in every six young girls take a pledge to remain a virgin until their wedding day, or to save their first kiss for then. Through interviews and observations, Treays sets out to investigate whether such an important decision is being made by the girls themselves or if their parents have a role in it.
The documentary takes us to Colorado Springs to attend the ‘purity ball’ organized by Randy and Lisa Wilson, two devout Christians who are passionate about protecting their daughters’ virginity. Here, fathers and daughters gather to celebrate purity and vow to protect each other’s chastity until marriage. Through conversations with both fathers and daughters, we get an understanding of the motivation behind this movement and what it means for the participants.
The film also looks at those with opposing views on this topic – from those who are against such a restrictive approach to sex education, to health professionals concerned about the potential psychological ramifications of enforcing such regulations on young women.
Cutting Edge is an insightful exploration of the controversial purity movement that is captivating audiences around the world. We see first-
