On April 20th, 1925, renowned English explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett set off into the wilds of Brazil to find a lost city he had christened “Z”. Accompanied by his elder son Jack and Jack’s lifelong friend Raleigh Rimmell, the three embarked on a journey that would prove to be Fawcett’s final expedition.
Fawcett was an experienced explorer who carved his own path in the world of exploration as one of the first to use aerial photography and satellite imagery in order to identify potential destinations. He had already made several trips into uncharted parts of the Amazon rainforest and this quest represented a culmination of his fearless exploration spirit.
The group left Cuiabá, the capital city of Mato Grosso, equipped with only what they could carry on their backs – no radio or other modern communication devices back then to keep them connected with civilization. They disappeared into the thick jungles without leaving any trace behind.
This extraordinary event inspired many adventurers over time who attempted – mostly unsuccessfully – to follow in Fawcett’s footsteps in search for his mystical “Z”, but it wasn’t until 2016 that an entire documentary was dedicated to The Lost City Of Z. Directed by James Gray and starring Charlie Hunnam as Fawcett, Robert Pattinson as Rimmell and Sienna Miller as Fawcett’s wife Nina, this movie is both moving and thrilling at the same time. It shows us how courage and determination can turn even a seemingly impossible dream into reality.
So if you are a fan of history or simply looking for an inspiring story about human tenacity against all odds – watching The Lost City Of Z is certainly recommended!
